I don’t know about research, but a Google on ‘tracheal resonance’
will take you to some voice teachers’ websites that discuss
how resonating the tracheal tube is what makes for great
singing voices.
I’ve been ‘purring’ for many years, and have various versions
of the exercise on my website. Check:

Ten good purrs - or ‘snarls’ if you hold the mouth in a smile, which is
what I prefer, and I begin to feel my fingers and toe tingle. This I take
as a signal that I have dissolved any lateral tensions in my body of the
sort that Wilhelm Reich named ‘armoring’. Armoring tension is what blocks
the free flow of energy - chi - orgone - prana - whatever - throughout the
body. I also find that once I finish the purring session, my voice
‘echoes’ all the way out to my extremeties, as if I have a nice echo chamber
inside! This state of what I call Maximum Resonance I find extremely
relaxing, and I try to cultivate it all day long.
I also practice “nursing on the uvula,” something I have observed that
babies do I their sleep. I think cats do this also, sometimes with their
tongues sticking out - very cute! The uvula nursing exercise is marvelous
done first thing upon awakening. For a somewhat lengthy overview, see:
