Hi all:
Patthabi Jois wrote on his book Yoga Mala to avoid practising hatha yoga outdoors. I lent my book so I don4t have to search for the reasons.
Around 8 years ago I had an interest experience practising Qi Gong outdoors. I did an exercise where my eyes were closed. When I was done and opened my eyes I felt the sky more brilliant. The sky was so shinning I felt scared for a few seconds. I related my Qi gong teacher about the experience and she told me if nobody told me about don4t doing Qi Gong outdoors, because chakras got opened and you are in danger of getting dangerous energies. Anyway my teacher was amazed regarding my experience because I was a newbie on Qi Gong on that time.
When I practise outdoor yoga I look for the shadow of a big tree.

How can practicing outdoors be any different tahn
indoors, really!? Ganas, or spirit ‘entities’ reside
everywhere…and the power of nature is
all-encompassing. Buddha sat under the bodhi tree, not
next to his television…
I simply don’t see, except for possible specific
places, how outdoors could be considered ‘evil’, or
unwelcome!?
Have we gotten’ too used to being creature of
domicile?

Would you say the same rule applies about meditating
outdoors? (well, I kinda do it anyway when im driving,
excercizing , especially shopping - lol). My previous
Yoga teacher use to meditate outdoors with us…

Personally I think to not do anything like that outdoors is
nonsense. It is great doing Tai Chi outdoors especially near water.
If I do Wild Goose Chi Kung and the Canadian Geese are migrating
overhead it is a wonderful feeling. It is lovely to feel the sun,
see the sky and the moving clouds while merging with nature. The
only drawbacks for sitting silently would be flies and other
distractions ( so I like sitting silently indoors), or when doing a
moving form having the dogs think you are bending down so they can
lick your face, or the cats coming to rub agaisnt your legs or
demand a stroke.
People love rules don’t they and gradually you build up so many
things you have to do or can’t do before you meditate it all becomes
ritual.
A monk told a fellow brother,"I asked the Father Superior if I could
smoke while I prayed and he said,“No.”
His companion replied,"I told you before it is all in the language
you use. You should have asked,“Can I pray while I smoke?”

Great response – and I LOVE the monk quotation at the end.
Namaste, Pamela P.
“Followers of tao are nonconformists. The conventional label our
behavior erratic, antisocial, irresponsible, inexplicable, outrageous,
even scandalous. We hear other voices than they do.” -Deng Ming-Dao
