I do not know what the context of the quote is, so I can only guess.

Perhaps it means that some of us do tasks and responsibilities that we need to tend to and that the time has not come yet to put a big emphasis on spiritual practice. Maybe some of us are not meant to fully dive into it and reduce our work to a very little amount.

Of course, AYP is meant to be a support for daily life, and the lessons are very clear about that. But we do have the tools to get pretty serious about it, just as John Wilder does in the novel, though that might not be for everyone.

At least that’s what I am thinking, maybe its all projection haha

This is the Bible quote that confuses me the most and any reference to “the elect”

In my opignon It has nothing to do about being chosen, or being called,

God’s knowledge (enlightment) is available to everyone who is able to comprehend the objective.

Then it’s up to them to comit to the practices, that is a choice.

I think that is what Matthew meant, but maybe he was better with numbers than words.

“The elect elect themselves”.

On reading the quote again, I’m thinking it has a lot to do with perseverance through difficulty. The initial impulse can be there, but there has to be the will and the patience of going all the way

That quote has always confused me too…
I’ve read it so many times and I still wonder, does it mean that some people are “chosen” by something outside themselves, or is it more about how we respond to the call?
Still trying to make sense of it.

Hi All,

This was originally posted to reflect what we see in the world, and how it has always been with the transmission of spiritual knowledge. In these times, it could be rephrased to say:

“Many are called, but few respond.”

The word “chosen” in the Biblical quote could reflect the rising sense of superiority in the early church, perhaps deemed a necessity for them to grow their influence. So approaching spirituality was like going to a job interview, and the church decided if you would be chosen or not, if you were worthy. Tickets to Heaven (“Indulgences”) were also sold for hard cash. Silly, but it is the way it was, and still is in some spiritual traditions, where obedience to the tradition, or guru, is emphasized as the way to spiritual salvation. You are chosen, or not, according to your obedience.

In any case, it is true that from the many who are called to spiritual practices, very few respond, perhaps one in 1,000, or one in 10,000. It may be even less than that.

So you who are on your spiritual path by your own choice are very special, and I bow to you. You are indeed chosen.

The guru is in you.
