When I’ve been trying to fall asleep, I lay on my back and put my hands folded on my solar plexus, simply because it’s the most comfortable position for me…yet when I do this after a few minutes I start to experience heightened states of consciousness.
Is there a reason why when I put my hands there, that this happens?
It sounds like you are inducing nauli mudra, possibly.
Laying on my back I always feel a bit of activity, as my belly sinks into the spine more.
Thanks for your reply Kyman,
You may be right that it is somewhat like the nauli, or uddiyana bandha. I think that perhaps I am stimulating the manipura chakra with the energy coming from my hands (my hands feel very open). Somehow this combined with laying down is awakening the kundalini. I achieve the same sort of mystical state that I do in meditation with this.
EDIT: I just found something which could explain it a bit:
-Swami Sivananda, The Science of Pranayama
You’re very welcome.
Might I ask where you got that quote? Is there a link?
Namaste Kyman!
You can download a free PDF e-book copy of Swami Sivananda’s excellent book “The Science of Pranayama” at the Divine Life Society website here:

It’s an excellent read, as are all of his works. Enjoy!

They are great reading material, yet it seems to me that he isn’t so experienced in all of the techniques he discusses. It seems like a lot of the time it’s merely stuff that’s been copied from other material…for instance the swara yoga recommended in his Kundalini ebook.
